What do Tenacious D, Lauryn Hill, The Killers and U.Va. a cappella have in common? They will all come together for one exciting night this Friday during Newtendo, the New Dominions' fall performance. The New Dominions are the University's oldest co-ed a cappella group, but, as they'll tell you, they're more than that.
"We have a certain ... flair that's different than the other groups," second-year College student Jamie Silverthorne said.
This "certain flair" is definitely present when the group is seen together. For example, in a single night, they learned all of Garbage's "Beautiful Like You" (a song they will perform at their concert), laughed at an erotically charged song one of them had to perform for church, sang at two dorm sings and made plans for their Halloween party.
"We're really just a group of friends who like to sing," fourth-year College student Abby Jenkins said. "When we practice, we don't just come to sing. Singing is only one component of what we do."
When they do sing, though, it is something to marvel at. The New Dos' unique music flavorings will take their audiences on an energetic and wild ride. In a single performance, they can make you laugh, cry, head bang and raise your hands in the air while shouting Hallelujah.
"One thing that people usually notice about us is that we sing a ton of different songs," second-year College student Mansha Malhorta said. "There are so many different genres of music, and we try not to limit ourselves to any one of them."
Just read the set list for their show, and you'll see that this is no joke.
"We have a diverse repertoire for this show," New Dos musical director Colin Addis said. "We'll be singing some Lauryn Hill, Cake, Queen, Seether and even a song from O Brother Where Art Thou."
If you have never been to a New Dominions concert, the best way to describe it is a musical adrenaline rush with an extra shot of caffeine.
"Whenever we sing a song, we want to spread energy throughout the entire thing," fourth-year College student Chat Hull said. "We may not do choreography, but our performance is still hardcore. It's ... an organic experience."
Newtendo is an organic experience that will be enjoyed by all. The New Dos' music, voices and stage performance have never been better. With awesome renditions of "Mr. Brightside," "Roam," "Broken" and a jaw-dropping, freakin' amazing performance of "Down in the River to Pray," (that will literally make the hair on your arms stand up), you can expect the New Dominions to give one of their best performances ever.
The group is ecstatic about their show, and hopes that audiences will leave feeling the same.
"Everyone needs to come see our show," President Lauren Hayden said. "If you come, your head will explode from our awesomeness."
So for those of you who are in the mood to have your heads explode from sheer awesomeness, you can see the New Dominions perform Newtendo, a show that's definitely worth seeing. Hayden puts it best when she says, "If you've never experienced U.Va. a cappella, we're a great group to start with."
Newtendo is Friday night at 8:30 p.m. in the Chemistry Auditorium. Tickets are $5.
