Lamar S. Owens, star quarterback of the U.S. Naval Academy, was charged with rape Wednesday, Feb. 22.The charges come from a Jan. 29 incident where Owens allegedly entered a female midshipman's room and raped her. Owens faces charges of rape, conduct unbecoming of an officer and indecent assault. The personal information of the alleged victim is being protected by the Naval Academy.
Last season, Owens was a co-captain on the football team and is considered a leader by his teammates. Owens was voted Most Valuable Player by his teammates and received the Naval Academy's Joe Bellino Award for leading the team in rushing.
A trial date has yet to be set and Owens is still attending school.
This is not the first incident of sexual assault or sexual harassment allegations at the Naval Academy. In 2001, three cadets left the school to avoid rape charges and in 2003 a midshipman was expelled amid allegations of rape. The charges against Owens were made by an investigation from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. Neither Owens nor family members were available for comment.
