The men's swimming team is in first place after the conclusion of the first day of ACC Championship competition yesterday. The men have a total of 70 points, while runner up Florida State has 66 and third place N.C. State has amassed 62.

The Cavaliers have already beaten their own ACC record in the 800 free relay with an NCAA "B" qualifying time of 6:27.16. Pat Mellors, John Millen, Stefan Hirniak and Fran Crippen all swam legs in the race. Virginia set the original record at last year's ACC meet with a time of 6:28.03.

Virginia finished fourth in the 200 medley relay to again earn an NCAA "B" qualifying time. This one was 1:28.51 which was just three hundredths of a second behind Clemson. N.C. State, who won the event, set a new ACC and ACC meet record with a winning time of 1:26.88.

Although the men's one-meter and three-meter diving has already concluded, those results have not been factored into the meet.
