Late summer sports boredom

We are officially in the doldrums of the sports calendar. I mean, I've been getting bored watching Sportscenter in recent days. That is unheard of. I usually watch ESPN around 3 hours a day. Recently, my daily viewing of television's best channel has been down to about one hour. There is nothing going on.

The NBA playoffs have been over for nearly a month. My Wizards took some Ukrainian with an unpronounceable name in the draft. At least they signed Eddie Jordan to a contract extension. Now if only they can get a referee to call Lebron James for traveling.

Baseball will get exciting in about a month, but as of now it's barely keeping my attention, especially since my Baltimore Orioles are in the ninth year of their Peter Angelos-induced coma. I'm just rooting for a New York Mets vs. Boston Red Sox World Series in which Big Papi takes Pedro deep around the Pesky Pole in Game Seven to give the Red Sox their second World Series title in three years.

NFL training camps may be opening up soon but I can't really get into pro football until about a week or two before the regular season begins. (But my Washington Redskins will win the Super Bowl this year, despite how terrible of a quarterback Mark Brunell is.) I also really don't care about T.O.'s latest narcissistic exploits.

College football practice starts soon as well which at least keeps my blood stirring a bit. I don't really know what to expect from Virginia football so I'll try to keep my expectations low so that I'll be pleasantly surprised if we do well.

The WNBA is a joke. If anyone reading this watches the WNBA, please send me an e-mail and let me know why. I would be most intrigued.

It is a great sport to play but I would rather go to an art museum than watch golf on T.V. for any prolonged period of time. And believe me, I hate art museums.

Now that the World Cup is over, no one cares about soccer anymore. I would rather watch "Yes, Dear" on TBS than an MLS game. Any sport in which penalty kicks
