Want to become fully immersed in Virginia sports? Go to these games

While you go around to all various classes, pick up your syllabi and pray your professors don't plan on using the entire period on day one (talk about a bad sign), consider this your syllabus for the fall sports season. Here is a collection of games to attend to supplement your football fever.

Field Hockey vs. Old Dominion

Sunday, Sept. 3

The No. 19 Cavaliers will know where they stand early on against their biggest in-state rival. With a new coach and experience all over the field, Virginia has a real chance to pull off the home upset. And a victory over the No. 4 Monarchs would give the program the big win it badly needs. Old Dominion handled the Cavaliers 4-0 in 2005 and eventually went to the Final Four. In fact, Virginia is 0-9 against the Monarchs since 1997.

Women's Soccer vs. North Carolina

Thursday, Oct. 5

There is nothing better in sports than a good rivalry.  And when it come to women's soccer, one of the best rivalries is between the Tar Heels and the Cavaliers. Two years ago the University became the first school to ever take an ACC championship from UNC.  Last year UNC avenged the loss by handing Virginia a stunning 4-1 defeat in the ACC championships.  During the regular season though, Virginia took the Tar Heels into overtime in front of a small sea of baby blue-clad fans who gathered despite pouring rain. This year UNC comes to Charlottesville, giving Cavalier fans a chance to show their spirit, and the Cavaliers a chance to show that North Carolina isn't the only team capable of revenge.

Cross Country vs. ACC

Saturday, Oct. 28

Considering that the University of Virginia cross country team is hosting the ACC tournament this year, if you're only planning to make one meet this year, this should be the one. If you ever wondered why anyone would ever spend their free time running through hill and dale for five kilometers, a gathering of the full conference offers the perfect opportunity to find out.

Volleyball vs. Maryland

Friday, Nov. 3

A good mid-season test for the Cavaliers will come in their second meeting of the year against the Terps. Each team has two preseason All-ACC players and Virginia returns seven starters while Maryland brings back four starters. While the Terps were picked to finish fifth in the conference (Virginia was picked second), Maryland has won the last three ACC titles. With a history of strong blockers, the Terps will come to Memorial Gym confident they can repeat last year's 3-2 victory.

Men's Soccer vs. Maryland

Wednesday, Nov. 11

The World Cup may have come and gone, but soccer fans will still have a chance to see some quality play this season when Maryland comes to Klockner to play.  Maryland may have won the National Championship last year, but when they come to Virginia they will be facing the team that was ranked directly above them in the 2006 ACC preseason poll.  Virginia has already won its two preseason exhibition matches, and is bound to provide some tough competition when the reigning champs come to town.
