Junior transfer Aisha Mohammed has beenselected to play for the Nigerian women's basketball team in the FIBA World Championships this September.Kevin Cook, an assistant coach for the WNBA Houstan comets will be coaching the national team.
"We are very proud that [Mohammed] has an opportunity to represent her country," Virginia coach Debbie Ryan said. "She'll be an asset as the team goes for a world championship."
In international play, Mohammed competed in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece where she scored 13 points in a win over Korea, ultimately propelling Nigeria to a 12th place finish.
As a sophomore at Central Arizona College, Mohammed averaged 22 points and 11 rebounds per game while leading her team to a perfect 28-0 regular season record. They also advanced to the national semifinals where Mohammed was named national tournament MVP. She would later garner first-team Kodak/WBCA All-American honors.
The 2006 FIBA Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil will pit Team Nigeria against some of the world's finest basketball teams. The United States, Japan, Germany and China are all on the schedule, so this tournament should be a tremendous opportunity for Mohammed to showcase her playing abilities.
