Change it up

Other columnists have written recently about the boredom of routine (Lauren Pappa) and risk-taking (Daniel McNally), and they are right, but the situation runs deeper than that. Consider the recent uproar over Facebook: It's clear that our lives aren't really that exciting if everyone is freaking out about changes to an online database. I can't even begin to imagine what procrastinators distracted themselves with a mere three years ago.

To keep in stalking mode for a second, let me guess what you did with your Friday night. You probably hung out with the same people you do most weekends, right? Went to one of about four bars on the Corner, or hit up a few frat parties, or went to a friend's party on 14th or JPA? Or am I missing a secret society's ritual sacrifice or some other ridiculous activity that I'm just not cool enough to know about?

I obviously don't have the answers, but your wardrobe is one thing that can be easily changed. There was a comic on Monday highlighting two different fashion options for girls going to football games (Ellisha Marongelli's "It's a Lemon"). "Preppy cute" was demonstrated by a floral sundress and pearls, while the "sporty cute" girl wore an Orange Fever T-shirt and a ribbon in her hair. Why does it have to be one of the two? Why can't you wear leggings and a mini-dress to class without someone screaming "orange spandex" at you?

I'm afraid fashion really is the only way I can think of to exert a little energy and spice up life. Luckily there is no dress code here, and you don't have to fit in one category. So, here are a few trends I have noticed for the coming season:

Plaid: Get in touch with your Scottish roots. Kilts and red plaid shift dresses are always classic, but this season plaid is coming in a variety of hues and fabrics. Look for fun details like leather closures, or unexpected plaid as a jacket lining or belt.

Animal Prints: Although the last time animal prints were in style I was wearing zebra stripes to a Backstreet Boys concert, they are actually surprisingly cute this season. Leopard prints in particular are all over the place. The trick is to only wear one piece at a time unless you are working at The Cheetah Club.

Dark Nails: Dark red and black short, vampy nails are very in this season. Even preppy girls can steal this look from the gothic peeps.

Boots: In case anyone feels like moving on from Uggs there are a multitude of different boot styles this season. Ankle boots are great for an edgy look with skinny jeans or leggings, and tall suede slouchy boots are perfect with a knee-length skirt or over pants.

I'm not going to finish this with some helpful Dr. Seuss-like advice. Seize the day! Eat cake in the bathtub! Streak your discussion section! No, no, no. Just remember: A cute outfit can make a world of difference, and if we are lucky we might be able to pull on our new boots and sing the Good Ole' Song a few times tomorrow. Go Wahoos.
