The good-ole days

On the shelf to right of my desk sits what I like to think is a decent DVD collection -- seasons of "Sopranos," "West Wing" and "Seinfeld," along with movies such as "Hoosiers," "Robin Hood" and "Shawshank Redemption." However, also on that shelf are some "VHS" tapes. Now for you first years who grew up with DVD-Rs and flat-screen, plasma high-def televisions all-in-one, VHS tapes are those black rectangular things that fit into this entertainment device called a "VCR" that was once a staple of the American living room.

Besides the one VHS tape which is a Washington Redskins highlight video from the 1991 Super Bowl season, the rest are tapes of my glory days -- game tapes from high school football contests.

I was no Rivals blue chip recruit. I have one game tape when I scored two touchdowns and caught over 100 yards and somehow that's the only one that gets shown to anyone.

Like many Wahoos who aren't Division I quality material, I miss those days of high school athletics.

While I'm elated to put the two-a-day summer football practices behind me, I feel this void in my college life as the athletic practices and games have disappeared from my daily routine.

And that is where intramural sports come in. It's that opportunity to relive the good ole days of high school sports here at U.Va. (although considering The Park "on Grounds" is quite the stretch).

Season One of fall intramurals started last week and we had our first intramural football game Thursday night. I've been on a flag football team since first year when my dorm team (yeah Emmet) captured the 4-on-4 flag football dorm championships and nearly beat the fraternity league champions. (It came down to the final play and the referees blew it, but that's a story for another day.)

We are pretty confident in our team, being fourth years and with this as our seventh or eighth season.

When we showed up at The Park, we were greeted by one squad that had coordinated uniforms; and these weren't Salvation Army hand-me-downs, either. Each player had a different Virginia football jersey, shorts, Under Armour-type cover-ups and brand spankin' new cleats.

Let's just say we weren't disappointed when we learned they weren't our opponent for the evening.

We later found out that this team was composed of football managers -
