Men take all in quad meet, women take two of three

The Virginia men's and women's swimming and diving teams hosted their first meet of the season this past Friday and Saturday. The meet featured two ACC rivals -- Clemson and Virginia Tech -- as well as Penn State. The men finished out their season opener a strong 3-0 while the women came in 2-1 -- falling only to Penn State.

The men took five of nine events, allowing them to beat Penn State 229-124, Clemson 202-149 and Virginia Tech 206.5-146.5.

The five events included a lead-off victory from the 200 Medley Relay, as well as a one-two finish in the 200 meter breakststroke and 200 free style. Junior Ryan Hurley finished fist in the breaststroke at 2:01.57 while senior Vanja Rogulj finished with 2:03.33. In the 200 free style senior John Millen finished first in 1:39.31 followed by junior Stephan Hirniak with 1:40.39. Millen also took the 1000 free style in 9:19.30 and Pat Mellors was victorious in the 400 I.M. which he finished in 3:59.45.

The women's team won two events at the meet. Junior Stephanie Glover took the 100 butterly in 56.17 and was the only individual to finish first in a race for the Cavaliers. Fortunately the 400 Free Relay also picked up a victory for Virginia with a time of 3:27.17.

Virginia next hosts another ACC rival, Georgia Tech, this coming Saturday, November 4th at 1 p.m. in the AFC.
