Law school names new Law & Business director

The Law School recently named Musictoday Executive Vice President Jim Kingdon director of its Law & Business Program, which was launched in 2003 to prepare law students for advising corporate clients.

Kingdon received both his JD and MBA degrees from the University program in 1998, a fact which members of the search committee saw as beneficial.

"We thought it was very valuable that Jim has both a JD and MBA and that he has significant managerial experience," said Law Prof. Paul Mahoney, who served on the search committee. "It will give him significant credibility with all constituents: the students, faculty, business executive who teach short courses and alumni who have supported the program financially."

According to Kingdon, after receiving his degrees, he founded the private equity fund Kestrel Ventures. While he was serving as in-house council at the equity fund, Kestrel Ventures founded Broadwing, a regional book distribution and third-party fulfillment company.

Kingdon directed finance and operations at Broadwing until returning to Charlottesville to join Musictoday, the Crozet-based independent download services company owned by Dave Matthews Band manager Coran Capshaw.

The Law & Business Program allows students to receive both JD and MBA degrees in four years whereas earning the degrees in separate programs would usually take five years.

According to Kingdon, the program's combination of both business and law aspects "gives students a greater confidence to understand clients' needs and provide effective council."

The program serves about 125 new students each year, but only those who are specializing in certain areas of business continue to a more intensive tier, Kingdon said.
