The Cavalier Daily
Serving the University Community Since 1890

The end of the blue era?

I don't know where you were Thursday night, but at my rambunctious house of 16 testosterone-filled men, you would have thought the Cavaliers were playing their opening round game Thursday evening instead of Friday midday.

The loud claps and screaming at the television -- I have yet to accept that the players can't hear us -- were not for the Virginia Cavaliers but for the Virginia Commonwealth Rams.

My intuition tells me it was not so much an expression of love for our fellow Commonwealth brethren, but rather our hope that the No. 11 Rams might be able to upset No. 6 Duke.

Our wildest dreams came to fruition as sophomore Rams guard Eric Maynor hit a 15-foot jump shot with 1.8 seconds left to propel VCU to a 79-77 upset victory.

Where does all this Duke hatred come from? Ask most people at Virginia and they will probably tell you the school they dislike most in the ACC is either Duke or Maryland.

There is legitimate beef with Maryland. They are a public school of a border state that has been a strong competitor across the board in conference athletics. Ironically, our oldest rival is North Carolina -- dating back to the 20th century
