It's that magical time of year for baseball fans as the Major League season is just around the corner and hope springs eternal for all teams. Virginia's spring athletes, however, have this to say to the pros: We started in February.
Virginia's club baseball team began its season by sweeping four games and winning the Ripken Experience-Myrtle Beach tournament in mid-February. Since then, the Cavaliers (8-4) have split series with Maryland and N.C. State, dropped two to Virginia Tech and then bounced back to sweep William & Mary on the road by a combined score of 23-2.
"[Against] Tech, we didn't play our best," freshman outfielder Alex Kozera said. "They are the best team we've played so far. We bounced back pretty strong against William & Mary, especially with the bats. We struggled hitting in timely situations against Tech, but against William & Mary we just jumped on them early and kept it going."
Virginia will travel to Radford this weekend to play a three-game series, including a doubleheader Saturday. The series carries greater magnitude than expected because of Virginia's conference affiliation. Unlike in the ACC, where games against Maryland and N.C. State would affect conference standings, the Cavaliers play in the seven-team Mid Atlantic Conference -- South Division. The division is comprised of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Richmond, James Madison, Radford, Washington & Lee and Virginia Commonwealth.
As such, the Cavaliers know they need to perform well at Radford, against a team with which they have experience, to improve their current 0-2 division record.
"We played them in the fall and we beat them pretty decently," Kozera said. "This is going to be a big series because it is a conference series and we want to get back on track in the MAC
