Council revisits two appropriation verdicts

The new members of the Executive Committee oversaw their first meeting when Student Council voted last night to allocate traveling funds to the Virginia Rifle and Pistol Club, after denying the club money in the first round of appropriations.

Council also approved a resolution recommending changes to the Lawn Pavilion selection process.

According to the club's initial appropriations request, "their travel fees were in the form of weekly requests," Student Council President Lauren Tilton said. "Because of the vagueness of the request, it was not originally funded."

Tilton said the appeal was granted because of "the proven legitimacy of the request."

The approval of the funds may also have been influenced by evidence of human error during the original appropriations process.

According to Chief of Staff Ryan McElveen, who was present at the groups' original appropriations hearing, a human error prevented the group's budget from being saved correctly, and the budget was passed along incorrectly through the appropriations process.

McElveen said members entered the information and then did not save the information. McElveen added that the group's concerns were "legit."

Vice President for Organizations Catherine Tobin said she had not known about the error until last night's meeting.

Virginia Rifle and Pistol Club members, unaware of the potential error, appealed the decision last week. The decision had been delayed until this week's meeting because of Council's failure to meet quorum at the meeting. Only members who had been to the hearing were allowed to vote.

"I'm extremely happy to have gotten the money," club President George Giammittorio said. "We certainly had a legitimate concern."

Council upheld its decision not to grant funding for the Student Game Developers, who also appealed their appropriations decision.

In addition to dealing wtih appropriations, council voted to approve the appointment of McElveen to the executive position of chief of staff, Victoria Ingenito to the position of director of University relations and Jeff McLaughlin to the position of chief financial officer.

McLaughlin said he hoped to "streamline expenditures and create a more efficient budget."

Ingenito said she wants to create a newsletter to keep students more informed aboutcouncil's work. According to Ingenito, the newsletter would contain information about pending resolutions, projects and contact information for council members.

"We just want something coming from the horse's mouth so to speak," Ingenito said.

Council also approved a resolutionrecommending that the Lawn pavilion selection process be modified, as well as a resolution in support of working with Students for Environmental action to make the University more environmentally sound.
