Honor Committee members proposed two amendments to the bylaws during the new Committee's first meeting last night.
These amendments change the language of the bylaws to clarify and redefine the position of vice chair for community relations and update several discrepancies that have arisen in the bylaws.
Josh Hess, vice chair for community relations, proposed one amendment to redefine the position he is serving. The proposed legislation will distinguish it from that of Vice Chair for Education Allie Moore.
"It's not really clear right now what the responsibilities of this role are, whether it weighs more heavily on creating community and dialogue or if it weighs more on creating benefits," Hess said.
The current language of the bylaws simply states that the "Vice Chair for Community Relations shall head the Community Relations Committee." Hess's amendment specifically adds new language emphasizing that all members of the University can benefit from upholding the honor system.
"I think that the project of expanding the system of benefits needs to be clear in the bylaws, and it needs to be the responsibility of that person to be sure that it endures and doesn't wane from year to year," Hess said.
The position was redefined by last year's Committee, which changed the title from vice chair for services -- several Committee members expressed reservations about establishing a precedent for continuing to redefine and expand the responsibilities of the role.
The second amendment, proposed by Vice Chair for Trials Brian O'Neill, would update the bylaws to keep them in line with Honor procedures. It adds the position of senior advisor to the bylaws and changes the number of College representatives from three to five, in line with the amendment passed during this spring's elections.
The Committee also passed its meeting procedures and a code of ethics for the upcoming academic year.
The Committee elected the heads of two subcommittees during its closed session. The Faculty Advisory Committee will be chaired by Adam Trusner, a Graduate School of Arts & Sciences student. Third-year Education student Katrina Custodio and Medical student Jon Overdevest will serve as co-chairs of the Diversity Advisory Board.
The ad-hoc committee chairs will be selected in next week's meeting.
