Dean of Students Penny Rue plans to leave University position

After eight years of service, Dean of Students Penny Rue plans to leave the University to accept a position as vice chancellor of student affairs at the University of California-San Diego beginning in September.

According to Rue, her appointment is still pending until it can be made official by the University of California Board of Regents, which is expected to occur in upcoming weeks.

Rue was one of about seven candidates interviewed for the position after a search firm at UCSD submitted candidates' names to a committee, according to Stacie Spector, associate vice chancellor at UCSD. The committee consisted of alumni, faculty, students and the chancellor's advisers. Spector added that candidates were then brought to UCSD to meet in open sessions with students and faculty. After feedback was collected the final recommendations were made to the chancellor of UCSD.

As vice chancellor of student affairs, Rue will be expected to oversee admissions and enrollment, student life and student educational advancement. She will also be responsible for supervising athletics, student health and wellness, student policies and judicial affairs, Spector said.

The search for a permanent replacement for a dean of students has not yet begun, saidPat Lampkin, vice president for student affairs. She added, however, that she hopes to have found an interim dean of students by Aug. 15 to "keep services in line."

In her time at the University as dean of students, Rue has overseen the creation of the Student Activities Center and the Kaleidoscope Room. She was also involved in the establishment of the Office of Fraternity and Sorority life.

Lampkin pointed out that Rue's position as a dean frequently involving working "behind the scenes" to help students.

Rue "put systems in place to make students' experiences stronger and safer," Lampkin said.

According to Rue, who came to the University from Georgetown University, the most rewarding aspects of her time at the University were the individual relationships she developed with students.

"She has ... provided a strong interest and sensitivity toward all of our students and has developed a staff that has similarly shown a tremendous interest in the welfare of our students," Athletic Director Craig Littlepage said.

Rue noted that one quality that has stood out in her time at the University is the sense of community among faculty, students and staff.

Rue said she hopes this "sense of community [the University] engenders among its students through the trust and respect that is given to students," will carry over to positions she may hold in the future.

"I will be sure in any other position to create an environment predicated upon trust and respect," she said.

Rue said she was unwilling to comment on her position at UCSD until her appointment is made official.
