Medical Center programs rank among top 50

The University Medical Center ranks among the best hospitals in the nation for seven different specialties, according to a list created by U.S. News & World Report.

The magazine considered 5,462 hospitals nationwide, narrowing the field down to the 173 that are included in its final rankings.

"This year we have seven specialties ranked; last year we had two," said Peter Jump, director of public relations at the University Medical Center.

Jump said he felt this improvement in rankings is partly based on what he called "nursing magnet status."

"One of the things that U.S. News looks for is 'Does it have nursing magnet status?'" he said. "That's something we have now, and you get an extra point, and that really helps bump you into the top 50."

The Center's endocrinology specialty was its highest ranked specialty at number eight. The areas of gynecology, cancer, neurology and neurosurgery, respiratory disorders, digestive disorders and urology all also ranked within the top 50.

"U.S. News is one of the main indicators of excellence in the medical world," Jump said, adding that the high rankings should allow the Medical Center to recruit top faculty from across the nation.

According to Jump, the rankings shift, sometimes dramatically, from year to year, because the differences between hospitals are small in many cases.

"Some years you may be ranked, some you might not," he said.

He pointed out that the Medical Center is, however, making efforts to improve its ranking.

"In the next few years, the fact that we've been recruiting a lot of top faculty from around America should improve our reputation," Jump said.

In determining the rankings, hospitals were considered if they were members of the Council of Teaching Hospitals, affiliated with a medical school or had six out of a list of 13 advanced services, according to the magazine's Web site. The hospitals must also have seen a certain number of Medicare patients in the specialty for which they were ranked. They were then given points based on three equally weighted categories: reputation, mortality rate and other care-related factors.

"We are very pleased to once again be named as one of America's best hospitals and this year to be recognized in even more specialties," stated R. Edward Howell, vice president and chief executive officer of the Medical Center, in a press release. "This recognition reflects the service offerings and excellent care provided to our patients."
