Freed hired as softball assistant coach

Virginia softball coach Eileen Schmidt has filled the last position on her coaching staff: Olympic gold medalist Amanda Freed is the team's new assistant coach. Freed, who hails from Cypress, Calif., was a member of the U.S. national team that won the gold at the 2004 Olympic Games, held in Athens, Greece. Freed's duties will include serving as a coach for pitching, outfielding, and batting. She will also assist with recruitment, team trips and camps.
