At its first meeting of the semester, the Honor Committee discussed its work during the summer and its plans to better involve first-years and faculty in the upcoming year.
One such initiative, a dorm talks program, began yesterday and aims at facilitating conversations about Honor among new students. Support officers involved in the program visit various first-year residences and address small groups to discuss Honor.
"I'm really excited about the new dorm talk program we've started up," Honor Chair Ben Cooper said. "We've got a huge opportunity to outreach to incoming students."
The Committee is also planning on holding an open meeting geared toward first-year students.
In addition to new students, the committee has made efforts to involve faculty in the honor system. One issue the Faculty Advisory Committee hopes to deal with is faculty reporting rates of honor offenses. According to Faculty Advisory Committee Chair Adam Trusner, only 16.4 percent of faculty report an honor code violation when the know they have witnessed one.
The Committee reached out to faculty through events such as dinners and a wine and cheese party for graduate students, Trusner added.
The Committee also hopes to reach out to current students through several community relations initiatives, including a benefits campaign and open committee meetings.
Committee members discussed their work this summer, as well. Cooper participated in the Semester at Sea program, helping with Honor orientation during the program. He worked towards implementing the University's Honor policy in a different environment, considering most of the students participating in the Semester at Sea program come from different schools.
"I think we've got a really strong base for the honor system," Cooper said. "I'm excited students will get to share that part of U.Va. culture.
The Committee is currently working with the Nursing School to appoint another nursing representative after Nursing school representative Ashley Jacob resigned over the summer for personal reasons, Cooper said. Co-chair of the Diversity Advisory Board Jon Overdevest said while members are currently pursuing a charge regarding an international student, the board has revised the honor portion geared towards international students in hopes of stimulating conversation about Honor.
