Reyering's kick puts Cavaliers over the top

Last night, the Campbell men's soccer team came close to being only the second school to beat the Cavaliers at home since the beginning of the 2006 season. Cavalier junior forward Yannick Reyering's penalty-kick goal late in the second half dashed the Fighting Camels' hopes, however, and cinched the Virginia men's soccer team's fifth victory of the season.

The Cavaliers' starting line-up featured several new faces. Freshmen Chase Neinken and Dan Louisignau made their first starts as did sophomore Ross LaBauex.

"I remember last year that just getting on the field was a good experience," sophomore Neil Barlow said. "We got a bunch of people that can just step in and play at any time. We are still building chemistry, but we are like 17 deep now and having 17 players at any time is just a great thing."

In the 12th minute, freshman T.J. Cyrus sacrificed his body trying to protect an exposed Cavalier goal, but Campbell freshman Khalil Johnson scored anyway. The Fighting Camels (3-2-0), on a break towards the net, had drawn goalkeeper Louisignau out and sneaked it past Virginia's last line of defense to go up 1-0.

"Dan is a very good goalkeeper, just lacking some experience," Virginia coach George Gelnovatch said. "God forbid should anything happen to Mike Giallombardo, Dan's our second goalkeeper, so we are trying to get him some minutes."

Midway through the first half, the teamwork of Cavaliers Barlow and freshman Matt Ayotte evened the score 1-1. Barlow's goal, his third of the season, brings him even with senior Chris Tierney and within one goal of Virginia's leading scorer, Reyering.

The second half saw several substitutions by Gelnovatch. Traditional starters Tierney, sophomore Jonathan Villanueva and Reyering entered the game hoping to jumpstart the Cavalier offense.

With less than 10 minutes to go, the Fighting Camels were penalized for a hand ball in the box. The Cavaliers were awarded a penalty kick that Reyering deftly placed into the upper left of the net.

"The dials got cranked up a bit as we got into the middle of the second half," Gelnovatch said. "Yannick is a great presence out there and a goal-scorer. The penalty kick comes from bombarding their box and when you do that, good things happen."

During his time at Virginia (5-1-0), Reyering is six-for-six on penalty kicks during regulation play.

"I read him -- I always do the stutter step and wait to see where the goalie goes," Reyering said. "So I saw that he was diving to the right side so I knew."

Virginia's first come-from-behind win of the season was also the Cavaliers' final non-conference game before starting conference play this Saturday.

"Every time you go into a big game, especially on the road, you need confidence," Reyering said. "So in that respect, this win today was great"
