Honor explores'flex exam' option

Last night's Honor Committee meeting focused on discussion of the "flex exam" program, which, if implemented, would allow professors to administer exams online with a more flexible time frame.

The Committee is currently developing the program and approaching University professor with the idea. Through the new system, professors would choose the time frame they wish to administer the exam and the students would then complete the exam within the allotted time, College Representative Catherine Anne Daley said.

"Professors would have a lot of control over how to give their exam," Daley said.

Professors who post exams to be completed within a 48-hour window or one-week period could receive finished exams on a rolling basis, giving them more flexibility and time to grade exams, Daley added.

"They won't have that crunch after exams are taken," Daley said.

The Committee has not yet, however, decided how the program is going to work technologically. Originally, members had thought about using Toolkit as a way to allow professors to administer the exam. Toolkit, however, will soon be replaced, according to Daley.

Josh Hess, vice chair for community relations, added that the flex exam program would be optional.

"We don't have any aspirations of making this a mandatory program," Hess said. "We're just hoping that we can make technology available."

The Faculty Senate will eventually vote on the proposed system once a "more solid program" has been established, Daley said.

"We're hoping it'll be attractive and easy [so] that people will want to do it." Daley said.

Members also discussed the current process for recruiting advisors, members and educators.

The Committee will be moving into its second round of recruitment interviews this week. Chairs said they were pleased with the quality of the applicants.

"We had a very high quality of applicants turn out this year," Vice Chair for Investigations Linda Liu said. "I took a few more than I normally would for round two interviews.

Liu discussed new ideas for the training of advisers, counsel and educators, explaining that she would like to incorporate more joint training sessions that include the advisers, counsel and educators.

Members "need to know what each other role does," Liu said

Vice Chair for Education Allie Moore said the Committee has also started working on a presentation for Sustained Dialogue moderators.
