Marching down the yellow bowl road

What is green and white all over and starts in 79 days? It's the 2007 College Football Bowl Season, and Virginia's blowout this weekend may be proof the team might just be on its way.

As I watched our football team score within the first few minutes of the game Saturday, I thought to myself, "Okay, somebody had his Wheaties this morning."

Then Virginia scored again, and again within the first quarter, and somehow I knew this could possibly be a game (and more importantly, a season) to remember.

Productive offense, solid running game, punishing defense and consistent blocking: Saturday, Virginia displayed vital signs of a new and improved team -- a bowl-eligible team.

Sophomore quarterback Jameel Sewell was on point early on, completing his first nine passes and running 64 yards on 12 carries. Saturday, Sewell produced accurate passes that resulted in quick, and what appeared seemingly easy, scores.

Holes opened up by a relentless defensive line allowed junior tailback Cedric Peerman to run 87 yards against Pittsburgh. By the end of the first quarter, Virginia had nine first downs, compared to the previous average of 16 downs per game.

Watching the Cavaliers man-handle Pittsburgh, I was blinded by two shiny words that quickly flashed across my eyes: "BOWL BID! BOWL BID!" What would be sweeter than the Wahoo's extending their playing season into December? Some speculation has already begun circulating about Virginia's chances of being a pick for the Humanitarian Bowl or the Meineke Car Care Bowl.

But as with most things in life, the Cavaliers (4-1, 3-0 ACC), now first in the Coastal Division, must take their journey towards a bowl game one step at a time. For now, they should be preparing to roll into the actually onerous segment of their schedule, as they face the likes of Connecticut, Maryland, N.C. State, Virginia Tech and Miami. The Hokies, aside from LSU, have yet to allow their opponents to mark 10 or more on the scoreboard, and this season Miami has rushed a total of 828 yards, while containing the opposing team to 485.

Nonetheless, Virginia has a good chance at winning many, if not all, of these games. The final deciding factor will be consistency. If the Cavaliers can consistently play the remaining matchups like they played Saturday, football fans look out, because the Wahoos will be headed down the yellow brick College Bowl Game Road.
