Run-in with electric pole on Rugby Road results in power outages

A truck driver's run-in with an electric pole on Rugby Road yesterday caused power outages for many homes in Charlottesville.

A truck traveling south on Rugby Road caught a power line next to the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Unitarian Church around noon, causing an electric pole to snap. The driver kept going after the incident, according to Charlottesville Police Sgt. Tom McKean of the Charlottesville Police.

The pole broke in two places, causing a power outage in about 75 homes, Dominion Virginia Power crewman T.J. Wilson said.

"It happens all the time," Wilson said. "Some trucks and cars don't get to make it away from here but in some cases they'll ... just keep on going."

A serviceman arrived at the scene about 15 minutes after the incident. Dominion was able to restore power to a majority of the homes within two hours after the incident occurred.

Neither police nor Dominion Power were led to believe that anyone was hurt.

Charlottesville authorities are currently looking for the driver; however they do not know the identity of the driver, nor do they have a description of the truck. If found, the driver could be charged with leaving the scene of an accident, McKean said.
