University Police arrested a suspect yesterday in connection with a stabbing that occurred off Rugby Road the night of Oct. 4.
University Police Lt. Melissa Fielding said the 22-year-old male suspect, Wesley Thomas Gay, is a resident of the Barboursville, Va. area. Fielding added that the suspect is not a University student.
"Alcohol played a huge role in this incident," Fielding said.
Fielding added that there was a "disorder" near the Delta Upsilon fraternity house that moved to the Madison House parking lot the night of the stabbing. The suspect later stabbed a University student, who was treated for his injuries and released from the hospital.
Fielding noted that the suspect was found at the scene the night of the incident, but charges were not brought until yesterday because alcohol hindered the initial investigation.
"Alcohol ... definitely was a factor in speaking with the suspect, the victim and other witnesses," Fielding said.
Fielding said police have charged the suspect with assault and malicious wounding.
According to Virginia Crime Code 18.2-51, malicious wounding is categorized as a Class 3 felony and is defined as any, "Shooting, stabbing, etc., with intent to maim, kill, etc. If such act be done unlawfully but not maliciously, with the intent aforesaid, the offender shall be guilty of a Class 6 felony."
