The fall fashion report -- aka what you should go buy right now

Despite the 90-degree days a mere week ago, it's starting to feel a little bit like fall. Considering it's October and we're about to embark on Fall Break, I'd say it's about freaking time. Besides, I've been getting really sick of wearing sundresses, and everyone knows fall clothes are the best. Because I read about a million fashion magazines a week I thought I'd compile a small list of fall trends that you most definitely should follow. This is especially pertinent for those of you who don't do the impulse mag buy at Harris Teeter. Or for those guys my roommate saw at the AFC working out in cargo shorts. You know who you are.

So, here goes.

Clothes:

I would say cobalt blue is probably the color of the season. You could go really crazy with tights or a dress, or a little subtler with shoes or a purse in the color. For the record, cobalt blue is kind of like royal blue in that it's quite bright, but it's not trashy. If necessary, Wikipedia or Google Image it.

Tights and boots are also very much in. I attribute this to the fact that dresses are still seriously en vogue. I'll never throw away my jeans but boots with tights and dresses may very well be the skinny jeans and boots of 2008. You heard it here first.

Shoes:

If you're going to buy boots there is a lot to consider, and I realize it's a big step finally giving those Uggs away to impoverished children who will then be forced to wear out-of-style footwear. Even though you're relegating them to the worst-dressed list, it's probably still good karma, so I'm giving you permission to replace them. Ankle boots are in style, but frankly I've never seen someone look good in ankle boots and a dress ever. I'm not sure what shape your legs would have to be in to look good in them, but I think your legs might need to look more like arms.

There is, however, a proliferation of tall boots this season that are really great. I'd suggest going with a chocolate brown, chestnut or black so you can wear them for awhile, but if you want the red cowboy boots, by all means. Leather is always good, because suede can be a large disaster in wet weather. Motorcycle boots are cool, and I still like moccasin-style fringe on footwear, but that may just be me.

Accessories:

Patent leather is going to be huge this season. H-U-G-E.Peep toe shoes, pumps, ballet flats, big purses with lots of hardware, clutches etc. Even a headband. Everything with shiny leather is way trendy. I'd go for maroon or purple personally, but again that's just me.

Beauty:

Blue and purple nails were surprisingly 'in' at the New York and Milan shows this year. Thank God! That blue nail polish (otherwise known as my salary) from this summer might actually come in handy. So finish up that bottle of maroon/black nail polish and move along. After all, no one wants to wear a trend Britney and/or Avril is still following.

Brands:

Every celebrity and his or her illegitimate child seem to be coming out with a fashion line these days. Luckily a lot of them are actually going the Target/affordable route as opposed to the Olsen Twins' rather expensive line at Barney's New York. Sarah Jessica Parker recently released Bitten at Steve & Barry's stores nationwide, where each piece will be less than $20! Sadly I have never heard of this so-called store, and it's not in my hometown or Charlottesville, but it might be near you so check it out.

Vera Wang has also come out with a really great line at slightly more expensive prices. Her brand, Simply Vera, opened in Kohl's stores Sept. 9 and apparently it was kind of a big deal. I sadly do not know where Kohl's is either, but I might actually look into that. Although I've heard the shoes are a bit iffy, the clothes are spot on, and you should probably run to your nearest Kohl's store before it's too late. Killer berets, colorblock satin dresses and pleated skirts are just some of the things you probably need in your wardrobe. Maybe you can write them off as a job interview expense? (I will.)

Fortunately you can get out of town tomorrow and go somewhere with some legitimate shopping. By all means, do so!
