Cavaliers fall to Wake Forest

The 21st-ranked Virginia men's soccer team fell to top-ranked Wake Forest 3-1 Friday night.

The Cavaliers' (10-6-2) last regular season game was also their last conference contest before heading to the ACC Tournament Tuesday. They close out the regular ACC season 1-5-2.

Wake Forest took an early 2-0 lead but by the half, the Cavaliers had come within one. With a chance in the 43rd minute, sophomore Ross LaBauex converted on a pass from sophomore Jonathan Villanueva for his sixth goal of the season. LaBauex is Virginia's second leading scorer behind ACC leader Yannick Reyering, who has tallied 13 so far on the season.

Midway through the second half, Virginia's comeback was halted as the Demon Deacons (15-1-2, 6-1-1 ACC) secured a comfortable two-goal lead once more. A free kick in the 70th minute gave Wake Forest's Lyle Adams the opportunity he needed to score the Demon Deacon's third of the night and make the final result 3-1.

Falling to eighth place in the conference standings, Virginia may take on Wake Forest again tomorrow in the first round of the 2007 ACC Tournament; the pairings will be announced today.
