Shooting on Gordon elicits city, U.Va. police response

Charlottesville and University police responded to a shooting reported early Wednesday morning near the intersection of 11th Street and Gordon Avenue. Though students nearby heard the shots, Charlottesville Police Lieut. Ronnie Roberts said the incident should not represent a safety concern for students.

According to Roberts, police responded to a "shots fired" call at about 1 a.m.

Police found a man shot in the foot at the intersection of 13th Street and Gordon Avenue.

"The victim in the case was fleeing the area at the time the weapon was being discharged," Roberts said.

The victim, a 30-year-old male, is not associated with the University, Roberts said, adding that the victim "was not very cooperative."

Fourth-year Architecture student Megan Donohue was outside of her house on 15th Street hanging Christmas lights when she heard the shots.

"I was sitting on my car and I was alone in the dark and I heard the shots," Donohue said.

She added that hearing the shots made her feel "apprehensive," although it is the first time she has heard a shooting in the area.

"It does raise some concerns with me," she said. "Last night I was really scared actually ... I think it definitely heightens my awareness and the measures I will take concerning my safety."

According to Roberts, students living in the area should not be concerned by the incident.

He noted that although the victim was found in an area where many students live, "the area where [the shooting] actually took place is not in itself a student-populated place. You just don't find students typically going in that direction."

Roberts added that no one involved in the incident was associated with the University and that those involved in the shooting are not believed to live near the scene of the crime.

"I would say not to be alarmed but to be conscious of your surroundings at all times," he said. "Just don't walk around by yourself, it's common sense."
