U.Va. to offer online bill payment

Starting in February University students will be able to pay their tuition bills online through QuikPay@UVA.

According to Sarah Jordan, director of communications for Student Financial Services, students' bills will no longer be mailed to their permanent addresses. Instead, students will receive their bills through e-mail at their University e-mail address.

Upon receiving the bill, students can then pay online, an option not currently offered by the University, or mail a check to the University.

According to Jordan, students will be able to authorize their parents or guardians to receive the billing statement through e-mail and then pay online if the student does not want the responsibility.

"Ultimately it's the students' responsibility," Jordan said. "This is one thing we try to emphasize with our parents."

The change will take place with the February billing statement, Jordan said. She added that QuikPay@UVA will eventually be converted into the new Integrated Student Information System that the University is currently developing.

Some students interviewed expressed indifference to the new system, while others raised concern about paying electronically because of credit card limits.

"I don't see how it will benefit the University or the students," fourth-year College student Ali Birouti said.

According to Jordan, there are several reasons for the change.

"We are way behind the times technologically," Jordan said, noting that QuikPay@UVA "will allow us to send out bills in a lot more effective manner."

Jordan also noted that by e-mailing bills, the cost and hassle of mailing them is eliminated. She said this will be particularly beneficial for international students.

"We also have issues with bills getting lost, and this way they always get out there," Jordan said.
