Singletary named candidate for Naismith Award

idseason candidate list for the Naismith Award, one of the nation's most prestigious awards in college basketball. The candidates -- as voted by leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators from across the nation -- are considered among the country's top 30 men's collegiate basketball players. Singletary has posted some of the best statistics in the ACC while leading the Cavaliers to a respectable 11-7 record this season. Within the ACC, Singletary ranks third in scoring with 18.1 points per game and first in assists with 6.7 per game. Recently, Singletary had consecutive big games against Virginia Tech and Boston College, recording a double-double in both games. He scored a season-high 34 points in the Cavaliers' overtime loss to Virginia Tech while also grabbing 10 rebounds. Against the Eagles, he scored 19 points and dished out 10 assists while leading the team to an 84-66 victory against Boston College.

Singletary is joined in the top-30 list of candidates by five other ACC players: sophomore guards Wayne Ellington and Ty Lawson and junior forward Tyler Hansbrough from North Carolina; senior guard Demarcus Nelson from Duke; and junior guard Tyrese Rice from Boston College. The four finalists will be announced on CBS March 23, and the winner will be named at the 2008 NCAA Final Four in San Antonio April 6. The award winner will join a list of basketball greats that includes Michael Jordan (1984), Larry Bird (1979) and Virginia alumnus Ralph Sampson (1981-83).
