The University saw 72 of its graduates become Peace Corps volunteers in 2007, regaining its ranking as the No. 1 producer of Peace Corps volunteers among mid-sized colleges and universities .
The University had been ranked first in its category for several years but dropped to second place in 2006.
The University has the opportunity to hit the 1,000 volunteer mark in 200as more than 930 University alumni have volunteered with the Peace Corps since the program began in 1961, according to the University's International Studies Office.
ISO Director Rebecca Brown attributed the consistently high number of alumni Peace Corps volunteers to the student way of life at the University.
"U.Va. has a culture of student service," Brown said.
Brown identified strong participation and growth in service organizations such as Madison House and Alternative Spring Break as factors contributing to significant alumni service in the Peace Corps.
"I think the international component of ASB has exploded, and it is a good indicator of why we have so many students going to the Peace Corps," Brown said.
