Cavaliers record two wins on Tobacco Road

Cavaliers record two wins on Tobacco Road The Virginia wrestling team picked up two victories on Tobacco Road Sunday, defeating North Carolina State 30-12 at Riverside High School in Durham and getting a 19-15 win against Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The Cavaliers (18-4, 3-1 ACC) fell behind the Wolfpack (8-9-1, 1-3 ACC)early, 9-0, but stormed back, winning seven of their final eight contests to take the match. Junior Rocco Caponi pinned freshman Dane Coffee at 184 pounds in just one minute as part of a string of five consecutive wins to give Virginia a 21-9 lead.

The Wolfpack won just one more bout as the Cavaliers dominated the rest of the match.

Repeating the slow start of the N.C. State match, Virginia also fell behind early to Duke 9-3 before mounting a comeback.

Freshman Chris Henrich kick-started the come-from-behind victory, gaining a 7-5 decision against sophomore Ben Wales at 174 pounds. Virginia then won the next three bouts , including a Caponi pin over sophomore John Barone in just 48 seconds to grab a 15-9 lead.

Duke tied the match at 15, however, as sophomore Mike Tunick edged out sophomore Jack Danilkowicz 6-5 at heavyweight, and senior Kellon McKeon won 3-1 against sophomore Ross Gitomer at 125 pounds.

The stage was set for a tie-breaking final bout and the Cavaliers' junior Eric Albright came through, winning easily against sophomore Chris Thumen 13-1 at 133 pounds, giving the Cavaliers the victory.

Virginia does not wrestle again until Feb. 24,when it faces No. 23 Maryland at home. A victory against the Terrapins would give the Cavaliers a share of the regular-season ACC title with Maryland.
