Schrimper elected as president

Second-year College student Matt Schrimper was announced as the new president of Student Council last night, along with Council's new executive officers and student representatives.

"This is wonderful," Schrimper said "I am really excited about the upcoming year."

In a brief speech after election results were announced, Schrimper said he believes "tonight is the realization of Student Council's potential, and tonight is a great start to reach out to the student community and get individuals involved with Council."

Aside from Council's goal of reaching out to a greater number of individual students in the University community, Schrimper also hopes to focus on developing a University Union Project.

This project "goes back to the idea of designating a single project to Student Council and returning to its mission as a source of communication and collaboration for the University," Schrimper said.

Outgoing Council President Lauren Tilton said she is excited for Schrimper.

"I think he's done great work on Council so far and will continue to do that by bringing his experience and relationships to Council," she said.

Tilton also noted some advice she has for the new president.

"I think it will be important for him to set out his goals for his upcoming year," Tilton said, "He should be organized and ready when summer comes so that he can get Council ready to go when the fall academic year begins."

Students also elected second-year College student John Nelson vice president of administration.

"I'm incredibly excited and really honored, and I think we have a great group of people this year," Nelson said.

Nelson added he hopes that as the new VPA he will facilitate more cohesive work between Council committee members and the representative body.

"Right now committees are the most direct route for students to get involved, but committee members don't always interact with the representative body," Nelson said, "I want to make an immediate change so the representative body gets to meet everyone on Council."

Working on the Executive Board alongside Schrimper and Nelson will be third-year College student Kayla Wherry, newly elected vice president of organizations.

"I'm really excited that I won, and I can't wait to get started," Wherry said. "I know it's a lot of hard work, but I'm definitely willing to put in the time to make the VPO position a lot better than it was this last year."

She also expressed a goal to make the appropriations process "as concise as possible" so as to "help CIOs get all of their money and also be clear on where else they can find money."

Wherry noted her support for the newly proposed CIO Scholarship Fund that would help individual students find additional funds for CIO expenses.

Catherine Tobin, the outgoing VPO, noted concern about Wherry's election but expressed good wishes for her successor.

"It's a little worrisome because usually VPOs have more [Appropriations] Committee experience," Tobin said. "I hope she's willing to learn quickly, set clear goals and show some interest in this position. I wish her luck."

Aside from the Executive Board, representatives for the upcoming term are second-year Architecture student Steven Riley; first-year students Sarah Munford and Samuel Davies, second-year students Ted Jordan, Todd Rooks, Kathleen Lee and Katherine Lee and third-year student Will Eden for the College; Darden student Kristen Clark; third-year student Iberedem Ekure, first-year student Nikhil Panda, and Nate Wilson for the Engineering School; Graduate Arts & Science student David Hondula; and Law students Corey Clay and Alexander Ibrahim.
