LAST MONDAY, the Virginia Photography Club hosted an event with Associated Press photographer Steve Helber, who shared his experiences in the early stages of the Iraq war while on board the carrier USS Kitty Hawk. Helber's photographs captured the strange vicissitudes of war from a naval perspective. Removed from the deadly fighting hundreds of miles away, his pictures revealed a whole new conception of a war that initially entertained the popular imagination with macabre sights of burning tanks and villages.
