Women's tennis victorious in first ACC match of season The No. 50 Virginia women's tennis team kicked off conference play Sunday afternoon with a narrow 4-3 victory against rival No. 64 Virginia Tech. The victory improved the Cavaliers to 2-3 overall , 1-0 in the ACC . The Hokies fell to 5-2 overall, 0-1 in conference.

The Cavaliers opened Sunday's matches with decisive victories in the doubles portion. Virginia pair junior Maggie Yahnerand senior Lindsey Pereira dominated in an 8-2 win against junior Inga Beermanand senior J.J. Larson. A second Virginia duo, sophomore Jennifer Stevens and junior Hampton Williams, managed a convincing 8-4 decision against senior Jessica Long and freshman Holly Johnson. Cavalier juniors Amanda Rales and Lara Alexander secured the sweep when they defeated the Hokies' top tandem of junior Jessica Brouwer and freshman Yasmin Hamza 8-4 .

The singles matches were more competitive, however, and valiant efforts were turned in from both teams. Yahner defeated Brouwer 6-4, 6-0 in the fourth singles slot. Rales, Virginia's top singles player, won 7-5, 6-3 against Beerman. A 6-2, 6-3 win by Alexander against Hokie junior Abbey Walker ensured the team victory. The Hokies' bright spots included Hamza'sexciting 6-4, 7-6 triumph against Stevens. Long followed suit with a come from behind 5-7, 6-1, 10-3win against Pereira. Johnson's victory against Williams 6-0, 3-6, 10-8rounded out the scoring for the Hokies.

Virginia women's tennis returns home Saturday to square off against Harvard at noon.
