Baseball remains undefeated in non-conference play In a midweek doubleheader against Stony Brook Tuesday, Virginia maintained its undefeated record in its non-conference schedule and remained unblemished at home, winning the early game 3-0 and roaring back from a 3-run deficit in the eighth inning to take the latter game 6-4.
In game two, the Cavaliers (16-4, 2-4 ACC) were faced with something they had not yet encountered against a non-conference foe this season: a deficit in the last half of the game. Heading into the bottom half of the eighth, Virginia trailed Stony Brook (4-7) 4-1, after being baffled by Seawolf junior starter Jeremy Nowak for the first seven innings for no runs and eight strikeouts.
With some patience at the plate and a little bit of luck, however, Virginia scrapped its way back into the lead. After a pair of back-to-back bunt singles, three walks, an errant throw home and two groundball outs that moved runners, Virginia had manufactured five runs. Senior Michael Schwimer earned his fifth save and second of the day with a perfect ninth.
"Anytime you can have a come-from-behind win, I think it starts to mold your team to really believe and have the confidence that they can come back and win a game," coach Brian O'Connor said. "Their starting pitcher was very, very good, and our guys hung in there."
The first game of the day, rescheduled from Wednesday evening to an abbreviated seven-inning game in anticipation of inclement weather, was dominated by pitching. Sophomore starting pitcher Jeff Lorick, freshman Robert Morey and Schwimer combined for a complete-game shutout, with Lorick allowing the only two hits of the day.
Stony Brook sophomore Matt Harloff was the hurler for all of the Seawolves' six defensive innings. Cavalier freshman Jarrett Parker had two triples in two at-bats, as Virginia knocked in one run in the third and added two more in the fifth to take the win.
Having lost two of three to N.C. State and Duke the past two weekends, the Cavaliers will look for their first ACC series victory this weekend in their first home conference series of the season against Boston College.
