Men's tennis team sweeps weekend on Tobacco Road

The top-ranked Virginia men's tennis team traveled down Tobacco Road this weekend and continued its undefeated season, beating both No. 10 North Carolinaand No. 41 Duke by 5-2 scores, setting a new school record of 25 consecutive victories against ACC opponents in the process.

The Cavaliers (23-0, 9-0 ACC) handed the Tar Heels (16-4, 6-1 ACC) their first conference loss Friday in Chapel Hill, cruising to the three-point victory. Virginia then followed that up with its second 5-2 win at Duke (7-11, 4-4 ACC) Sunday afternoon.

Seniors Somdev Devvarman and Treat Huey continued their strong singles play at the top of the lineup. Devvarman dismantled North Carolina's Benjamin Carlotti 6-3, 6-1 and similarly cruised past No. 50 David Goulet of Duke 6-4, 6-4, running his winning streak to 25 consecutive matches. Huey picked up a hard-fought 7-5, 3-6, 10-5 win over Tar Heel Clay Donato and followed that up with his thirteenth straight win, a 7-6, 6-4 triumph over No. 62 Reid Carleton.

Also continuing his winning ways was senior Ted Angelinos. Angelinos extended his winning streak to 18, shutting out North Carolina's Will Plyler 6-0, 6-0 and beating Duke's Jared Pinsky 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 6 singles position.

Virginia picked up both doubles points this weekend despite a loss against North Carolina from the recently formed team of junior Dominic Inglot and freshman Michael Shabaz and an upset of the top-ranked tandem of Devvarman and Huey against Duke. The Cavaliers seemed to have found an answer at the No. 3 doubles position with Angelinos and sophomore Lee Singer, an area that had been worrying Virginia coach Brian Boland in recent weeks. The No. 45-ranked tandem of Angelinos and Singer returned to the lineup and picked up two victories at the bottom position, both by scores of 8-5.

Virginia returns home this weekend to host North Carolina State Friday and Wake Forest Sunday.
