Women's lacrosse tries second time for 400th win

The Virginia women's lacrosse team will try to make history Sunday by winning its 400th game in program history.

No. 4 Virginia (10-3, 4-1 ACC) will look to gain the milestone win against No. 16 Johns Hopkins (6-6) Sunday at 1 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium, where the team has posted a 5-0 record this season.

Virginia will face its eighth ranked opponent of the season Sunday. The Cavaliers have a record of 4-3 against teams in the top 20, games that provide Virginia an opportunity to impress the NCAA Tournament committee. With just two regular-season games remaining, Virginia has a chance to make a final statement, though it must get its potent offense in gear again after being limited to seven goals Wednesday.

A major part of that effort will come from junior midfielder Ashley McCulloch, who leads the team in points and assists, and junior attacker Jenny Hauser, who will have to add to her team-leading 28 goals.

Forced turnovers from senior defender Alice Hughey would aid senior defender Claire Bordley in setting the tone on the defensive end. Also on defense, the squad will attempt to continue controlling the ball as much as possible, a effort that will rely on the draw-control prowess of sophomore midfielder Brittany Kalkstein.

Senior Kendall McBrearty will anchor the backfield in goal if she continues to give up just 7.17 goals per game. Come Sunday Virginia will expect that same performance from McBrearty and the defense, all while hoping its high-powered offense gets back on track against the Blue Jays.
