The usual changing of the guard took place in spring 1979 for the Managing Board of The Cavalier Daily. It was also, however, the ending of an era. While the newspaper had been around since its founding in 1890, it faced a crisis in 1979 that threatened its very existence. The crisis led to a rally on the Lawn involving about 1,500 students and ultimately, the expulsion from Grounds and then the return of The Cavalier Daily.
In the late 1970s, the University's Board of Visitors created the Media Board to oversee various student media organizations on Grounds. Not all accepted the Media Board -- namely, The Cavalier Daily.
