Double standard on candidates

I wonder how an editorial cartoon drawn by Lauren Caldwell would be received if it had implied Sen. Barack Obama had prevailed over Sen. Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primaries only because he was African-American, rather than suggesting, as it does in Friday’s edition (Sept. 5), that Gov. Sarah Palin was selected as John McCain’s vice presidential nominee only because she was a woman.
One would hope that individuals who are swayed by an otherwise unqualified senator’s nebulous promises of hope and change would not have the nerve to accuse their political adversaries of being superficial. Arguments on both sides should rise above such reductive and narrow-minded thinking.
