Being a former walk-on at the University, I was at the Gator Bowl against Texas Tech and I watched Peter Lalich on the sidelines in the first half talking smack with his buddies on the team and not even watching the game when we were on offense. It was no surprise that he laid an egg when he got in the game as he had barely watched a down prior to being called on to hold the lead.
I agree it is too extreme to let him go; however, the team will be better for it next year.
Specifically, the University has fallen into the nepotism trap that has been the downfall of many other programs (FSU for almost 10 years, South Carolina this year, etc.) when the head coach feels obligated to give his son the offensive position when he is clearly not ready or incapable of handlng the position.
This year, Groh has completely abandoned the run despite two great backs — our strength.
I am sure that we will be underdogs to Duke. Look for Coach Groh to begin playing all the young kids in an effort to say we are rebuilding for the future.
Since the Gator Bowl, the football team and its players have provided us with many black eyes with their off-the-field antics. The decision on Peter is either a weak attempt at making a statement or the start to some real reform and discipline sorely needed for this team.
Coach Groh — the clock is ticking loudly on your tenure.
