The picture of a Tibetan nomadic family printed on the Nation & World page of Monday’s paper (Sept. 22) lacks a proper explanation and gives a very wrong impression.
Resettlement of Tibetan nomads is a very divisive issue implemented by the Communist Chinese government to “preserve the grassland” and “improve the living standards of the nomads.” But in reality, it is another attempt by the Communist regime to dilute the Tibetan way of life and Tibetan culture.
Last year Human Rights Watch released a report on this topic in which it condemned the “ecological migration policies” (another name for resettlement of Tibetan nomads) and called it “a classic violation of indigenous peoples’ rights to land use and livelihood.”
One can judge for themselves the pain and suffering this policy has brought to the nomads.
So, printing a picture of a happy Tibetan family in the paper is a very fine effort to bring awareness to the international issues relevant to our times, but without the relevant explanation or an appropriate picture, that shows the pain of “resettlement of Tibetan nomads,” the effort becomes worthless. The picture at the end of today’s paper gives a wrong impression of the truth.
