The Cavalier men’s soccer team maintained a perfect conference record and extended its winning streak to three Friday, beating rival Virginia Tech 2-1 at Thompson Field in Blacksburg.
Virginia (5-3-0, 2-0-0 ACC) was led on the offensive end by junior forward Matt Mitchell, who scored both of the Cavaliers’ goals and was a standout all night. Mitchell drew first blood in the 19th minute, taking advantage of junior Ross LaBauex’s cross. Senior midfielder Scott Dillie gave Virginia Tech the equalizer in the 40th minute, but with just more than 10 minutes left in the game, Mitchell scored again off a rebound. The Cavaliers held off a barrage of last-minute attacks; despite the wet and slippery conditions, junior goalkeeper Michael Giallombardo recorded three saves on the night. The Hokies led Virginia in total shots 13-9, but the Cavaliers made more of their opportunities as they kept seven of their shots on goal to Virginia Tech’s four.
The Cavaliers are hoping to continue their success on the road at North Carolina this coming Friday, despite the fact that freshman Chris Agorsor is out with an injury.
