In a game pitting the No. 7 Virginia women’s soccer team against No. 15 West Virginia, the Mountaineers engineered a shutout, downing the Cavaliers 3-0.
Playing away from home, the loss was the first of the season for the Cavaliers (6-1-1, 0-0 ACC). Sophomore forward Megan Mischler led West Virginia (6-1-2, 1-0 Big East) with two goals, while freshman reserve forward Blake Miller netted one goal.
The first goal was scored in the first two minutes of the game by Mischler off a rebound from her own shot. The second and third goals were scored in the 71st and 83rd minutes. The second goal came off a costly Virginia turnover that Miller fired into the middle of the net, while the third score was a long breakaway shot, Mischler’s second of the game.
West Virginia sophomore keeper Kerri Butler put in a strong performance in the net with three saves, helping preserve the shutout for the Mountaineers. Virginia’s senior starting goalkeeper Celeste Miles allowed two of the three goals scored on Virginia.
Virginia goes on the road Thursday to face off against ACC rival No. 9 Florida State in Tallahassee.
