The Virginia women’s soccer team took its undefeated record on the road for the first time this season this past weekend in the Georgia Nike Invitational. The Cavaliers faced then-No. 22 Georgia Friday and Auburn Sunday, adding a win and a draw to their record.
Virginia downed the Bulldogs in the first matchup 1-0. The lone goal was scored during the 69th minute when senior midfielder/forward Kelly Quinn headed a corner kick from junior midfielder/forward Caitlin Miskel into the back of the net.
The Cavaliers, however, had their perfect record blemished against Auburn; the game ended in a 1-1 draw, as the Cavaliers were unable to convert their statistical dominance into a win. The No. 7 Cavaliers (4-0-1) peppered the Auburn goal with 11 shots — receiving only 3 in response — and went ahead in the 43rd minute on junior forward Amanda Stewart’s goal. They were unable to add another to the board, however, thanks largely to Auburn senior keeper Allison Whitworth, who kept the score tight with 10 saves during the match.
Auburn coach Karen Hoppa made nine substitutions in an attempt to wrest control from Virginia, but the low-scoring Cavaliers still kept hold of the play. In the end, however, the rough-playing Cavaliers led the Tigers (2-3-1) 22 to 15 in fouls, and one of these proved costly as Virginia conceded a penalty in the game’s final minutes. Auburn’s Gabi Rivera tucked the spot kick away to tie the score at 1-1, and Cavalier senior defender Sarah Senty was yellow carded for protesting the decision.
Virginia was denied a late winner by Whitworth, who kept out senior midfielder Nikki Krzyik’s penalty kick.
