Groh must go

Paul Wiley’s column (“Fire this clown,” Nov. 5) was appropriately harsh and entirely on the mark. The commonwealth of Virginia and its flagship university are better than the “model” that this antique alumnus and his son have the vision and execution to establish.

We can do better than the failures and blotter sheet entries that have become commonplace. Virginia must lead, not slouch toward the back of the line. Groh’s time has passed. New, 21st century, innovative leadership is needed to produce victories while honoring the finest aspects of the school’s tradition and its academic and social requirements.

Former coach George Welsh honored these aspects and reached out to all of the state’s best young men. Such actions are expected and sorely needed.
