Regardless of race

Being a Hispanic student at this wonderful University, I have to disagree with the guest viewpoint “Discrimination by nature” (Oct. 30). My basic assertion is this: Racism is caused by poverty, not the other way. I had to go to public school in Miami, Fl., one of the worst school districts in the country, with my father making only $13,000 a year. The only reason why I am here is because I earned my full scholarship with my work, not because of my origins. If this country is ever to move ahead in race relations, we must understand that poverty reinforces the racism that continues to exist. We cannot continue to blame the current generation for the mistakes of the past. Ensuring socioeconomic diversity is the only way to ensure racial diversity because a majority of minorities are poor or live in poverty. Even Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. understood this critical point. Help the bright students that live in poverty achieve the American Dream, regardless of race.
