I am writing in response to Ashley Chappo’s letter, “Sexist caricature” (Dec. 2). I believe The Cavalier Daily is not wrong in the least for publishing Thomas Lynch’s Nov. 24 editorial cartoon. I believe Chappo is thoroughly overreaching in her conclusion that the cartoon assumes “that any woman who attempts to affirm power in politics is either trivial or ... downright crazy.”
When I looked at the cartoon, not once did any of those thoughts enter my mind. In my opinion, the cartoon depicted how Clinton is prone to making rash decisions and that her political influence should be overseen by President-elect Obama. I did not interpret the image to mean that she should be chained up and forced to do a man’s bidding because she is a woman.
Personally, I am getting sick of so many people throwing the gender or race card at almost every opportunity. This world is becoming so politically correct that it is boring. Last year several individuals complained that some of the comics were offensive to certain groups resulting in many comic writers quitting. Everyone must look over their shoulders nowadays before they even say “Hi” to someone because of overreactions like this.
I respect and am aware of the fact that differences resulting from ethnicity, gender and personal beliefs have caused people to be discriminated against, and that some groups still suffer. But I do not feel that it is necessary for everyone to get up in arms over every little thing. Occasionally, I simply wish that people would take a step back, take a deep breath, and realize that the entire world is not attacking them.
