Spring Trivia

There is no question that many of the Virginia spring sports teams are experiencing high levels of success this season. From Klöckner to Davenport, there are a number of teams that have a conference championship in the crosshairs.

Let’s see how much you know about some of these programs.

For the men’s lacrosse team, the goal is a national championship. The lacrosse players have had an impressive run so far in 2009, winning 12 straight games to start the season. As the regular season enters the final two weeks, a perfect year is well within reach for the Cavaliers.

1. The last time the men’s lacrosse team went undefeated was:
     a. 1998
     b. 2000
     c. 2002
     d. 2006

2.  So far this year, only one other men’s lacrosse team is undefeated. It is:
     a. Notre Dame
     b. Duke
     c. West Virginia
     d. Delaware

The Cavaliers only have Duke and Dartmouth left on the regular season schedule. After that, they will make their run for the national championship.

3. Dating back to 1972, the men’s lacrosse team has won __ national championships:
     a. 2
     b. 4
     c. 5
     d. 7

As expected for any top-ranked team, the Cavaliers are among the leaders in a number of statistical categories.

4.  As of April 5, the Virginia men’s lacrosse team has sole possession of first place in this category:
     a. Goals per game
     b. Face off win percentage
     c. Scoring margin
     d. Fewest goals allowed

From the bench to the starters, a number of players have made contributions to each of the team’s 12 wins. Senior captain Danny Glading has been arguably the most valuable player for the Cavs in 2009. Prior to the season, he was named the preseason Player of the Year. Recently, Glading was named a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. His name will also likely be considered for the Tewaaraton Trophy, the award for the top men’s lacrosse player.

5. Only two Cavaliers have ever won the Tewaaraton Trophy. They are:

     a. Johnny Christmas and Matt Ward
     b. Conor Gill and Tillman Johnson
     c. Matt Ward and Chris Rotelli
     d. Doug Knight and Roddy Marino

Let’s not forget about the girls, either. The women’s lacrosse team has suffered a few narrow defeats but is still competing for a conference crown and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The team is on a three-game win streak heading into next weekend’s game against perennial power, Northwestern.

6. This Cavalier is tied for fourth in the nation in ball controls per game, averaging 4.00:
     a. Jen Holden
     b. Brittany Kalkstein

     d. Jenny Hauser

7.  The only Cavalier to win the women’s lacrosse Tewaaraton trophy was:

8. The women’s lacrosse team has won __ national championships:
     a. 1
     b. 3
     c. 5
     d. 7

Let’s move now to baseball. Though the ACC is among the most competitive conferences in Division I, the Cavaliers are playing well enough to win a conference championship. With improvement in a few areas, Virginia could find itself making a run to Omaha.

9. Virginia is among the top teams in the nation but has yet to win a national championship in its history. This ACC team has won four national championships, the most among all teams in the conference:
     a. Florida State
     b. Miami
     c. North Carolina
     d. Duke

10. The Virginia baseball team has five losses this season. There is only one Division I team in the NCAA with fewer losses than Virginia thus far. That team is:
     a. Stanford
     b. Rice
     c. Arizona State
     d. New Mexico State

11. The Virginia offense has had little problem scoring runs. One of the reasons why is because it leads all Division I teams in:
     a. Sacrifice flies
     b. Runs scored
     c. Hits
     d. Home runs

The Virginia offense is not the only thing that has impressed fans. The Cavaliers have also received quality starts from their starting pitchers.

12. This young southpaw is tied for 13th in the nation with 58 strikeouts this season:
     a. Andrew Carraway
     b. Matt Packer
