Student Council passed a bill last night that will ensure monetary support for the University's Learning Needs and Evaluation Center, with the hope that it may help disabled students find housing options off Grounds.
Under the bill's provisions, Council and local landlords will donate a total of $2,000 to the LNEC to address disabled students' needs.
"Based on observations of off-grounds housing options, oftentimes resources that a student with disabilities need may not be available," Council President John Nelson said.
Nikhil Panda, Council vice president for administration, said Council will donate $500 to the program. Nelson said the money was derived from a portion of the advertising revenue of Council's off-Grounds Housing Web site. Additionally, three local landlords each agreed to match Council's $500 donation to LNEC.
The bill was the result of a collaborative effort between Council and the off-Grounds Housing Office.
"The Student Council has been working with off-Grounds Housing and area landlords specifically in the area of providing accommodations with students with disabilities," Nelson said.
Panda noted that although the bill does not specifically designate that the money will be used to help disabled students physically acquire off-Grounds housing, he said it will be used in accordance with Council's and the Off-Grounds Housing Center's goals. LNEC is a Student Health program that provides academic accommodations for students with documented disabilities to ensure that they have successful experiences at the University.
