Packard Foundation honors Prof. Janes with engineering fellowship

Biomedical Engineering Prof. Janes will use $875,000 grant for general research

The David & Lucile Packard Foundation named Biomedical Engineering Asst. Prof. Kevin Janes a recipient of the Packard Fellowship for Science and Engineering last Thursday for his outstanding achievement in the field of biomedicine.

In his research, Janes said he is trying to understand how the hundreds - and perhaps thousands - of different signaling molecules inside a cell work together as a network to coordinate a cell's decision to proliferate, differentiate or die in response to environmental changes.

"I use the engineer's perspective to conclude how cells change according to different environments," Janes said.

Janes said he plans to use the grant to support his general research activity by bringing two graduate students and one postdoctoral researcher onto the project. The unrestricted research grant is for $875,000 during a five-year period.

The Fellowship Program was established in 1988 and arose as a result of David Packard's commitment to strengthening university-based science and engineering programs, Packard Foundation spokesperson Catharine England said. The foundation was established in 1964 by Packard to help support the local community, which supported him and his research.

The 2009 fellows were nominated by presidents of 50 universities that participate in the Packard Fellowship program. The 99 nominations were reviewed by the Fellowship Advisory Panel, a group of nationally recognized scientists, which then recommended 16 fellows for approval by the Packard Foundation Board of Trustees.

Several other organizations also have recognized Janes for his achievements this year. The National Institutes of Health granted him the "New Innovator" award last month. In addition, the Pew Charitable Trusts named Janes a 2009 Pew Scholar in June.
