Virginia clips Eagles

Barlow dishes two assists as Bates, Ownsy score to top Boston College 2-0; win moves Virginia to 3-3 in ACC play as team prepares for match against Terps

The Virginia men's soccer team dominated Boston College in a Sunday afternoon match, cruising to a 2-0 victory.

With the win, the Cavaliers (10-3-1) improved to 3-3 in the conference, with less than a month until the ACC Tournament.

"It puts us, with two games left in the conference, in a position to win the conference," Virginia coach George Gelnovatch said, "so this [win] was huge."

The first half ended scoreless for both the Cavaliers and the Eagles (9-7, 3-2 ACC), as both teams struggled to make accurate shots. Although Virginia nearly doubled the number of shots that Boston College took in the first quarter, the level of play was relatively even. The teams totaled five corner kicks each during the first half. Adding to the intensity was the highly physical play, as the Eagles committed six fouls and the Cavaliers drew five.

Virginia began to take control of the game early in the second half. Freshman forward Will Bates connected on a pass about eight yards out from senior midfielder Neil Barlow in the 58th minute to score the first goal.

"Neil picked up the ball in their attacking half and took on one or two guys and then he was unselfish with it and slid it to me," Bates said. "I just had to take the shot and got lucky it went through the goalie's legs. I'll take it."

The goal gave Bates his 13th point of the season. He leads the Cavaliers in that department.

Bates' presence has been a major factor during the past three games, during which he has scored four goals. Bates scored two goals in the 3-1 win at Virginia Tech last Saturday and added a key point in Wednesday's 2-0 win against Howard at Kl
